A shadow market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Worries
However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Some experts stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
Based on the social media company, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.
Within minutes of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Inside these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for Telegram stated it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
