The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being deemed a escape threat

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
