EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
